The City of Bessemer, Alabama hosts the First Annual Unity Day Event in City history on Friday, February 28, 2014. The press conference will be held at 11:00 AM sharp, followed by the City hosted luncheon. Free and open to the public.
The City Government of Bessemer, Alabama unanimously passed the resolution (below) on March 13, 2013, officially designating Unity Day to be celebrated every year on the last day of February:
“The City of Bessemer which has as its objective the promotion, appreciation and celebration of the contributions of all people and communities of the City of Bessemer towards building a more cohesive community…
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Mayor and City Council of the City of Bessemer that the residents of the City of Bessemer along with all elected officials, civic and religious leaders, and the business and academic communities of the City of Bessemer to join together in an expression of unity to help promote and fulfill our common values and aspirations for cohesiveness and the growth and development of our city and its inhabitants…”
Champion of the Unity Day Resolution, Bessemer City Councilor David Vance representing the First District of Bessemer will be among featured speakers of the Luncheon. Vance was the driving force behind proposing the concept, as well as getting the Unity Day Resolution which was co-authored by City Attorney Gregory Harris, on the table and approved. Also presenting will be the full City Council Representation of Bessemer, Alabama .
Bessemer Mayor Kenneth Gulley will personally address the Unity Day Luncheon on behalf of the City.
Featured speaker of the Unity Day Luncheon is M. Kita Williams, dynamic speaker, media journalist, economic development specialist, and civil rights advocate from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“A special unannounced guest or two may also join the podium on Unity Day …be prepared to be proud and impressed”, said Williams.
Media set-up begins in the Library Conference Room from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM.
