Nashville, TN – The hardest working man in show business was the featured speaker at Fisk University’s 139th annual commencement on May 6, 2013. Joyner was also bestowed the Fisk University Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters Degree at the ceremony held at The Temple Church in Nashville, TN.
True to his roles as a media legend and adviser, philanthropist, and avid supporter of higher education and HBCU’s, Joyner gave an address that brought the crowd of proud families and friends to their feet in applause.
The graduates and audience alike were fully absorbed with Joyner’s fatherly, businessman’s words of praise, encouragement and advise.
A crowd favorite was “Tom’s 10 Tips for Graduation” where Joyner instructed graduates to excel not only in their careers, but also in their health and wellness, spirituality, and to “Give back, give back, give back!”
Joyner said to the young graduates, ” … Support and stay in contact with your Alma Mater. If you don’t have the money to send, send yourself…be a mentor. It’s OK to move out of the old neighborhood, JUST GO BACK! Help and inspire kids to go to college.”
With those words, all in attendance of the ceremony were standing and cheering in agreement.
Immediately afterwards, graduates walked the aisle to receive their coveted degrees. Joyner personally shook every graduate’s hand and gave them a gift.
Congratulations to all Fisk University graduates and Dr. Tom Joyner!
